I’m renting a house and the landlord is allowing me to paint. There are some ancient metal cabinets in the kitchen that are straight out of the 60’s. I’d like to paint them, but not sure what kind of paint I need to buy. Obviously I’d like it to be as cheap as possible, considering I’m renting the place. I don’t know what type of metal they are, but they are painted already and appear to have some sort of enamel finish. Do I need to sand them before painting?

I would sand them, wipe with denatured alchohol and paint with Rustolum Spray paint.
Metal Roof Paint
Metal roof paint is no longer just black and white. JNK Products is proud to distribute CALBAR ® brand metal roof paint
Krylon has a spray paint. But your best option is to lightly sand, coat with Kilz, then coat of enamel (lightly sand, final coat of enamel.
Yes, sand them before painting. Then use an oil based paint or lacquer finish to spray on. Be sure to mask everywhere that you don’t want paint to be by at least a foot to be safe including the floor. Also, pick up a 3M mask so you don’t die from the fumes.
You will be proud of the final finish as it will be smooth and nearly bullet proof.
