Really want it to look professional. We have newer oak cabinets in the house we bought, but I hate oak cabinets. Can I stain them cherry and have them look nice? Do I have to replace the doors to really pull it off? Has anyone done this that can tell me about your experience?

Thanks for the good answers Woodtick and Don, I hate to put on a veneer, the cabinets are only about a year and a half old and are solid wood. I guess I just have to either live with the oak or stain it into a cherry. Is all red oak really light? Just curious if it could be made to something believable with a bit more color than a bland oak.

I just finished a basement for a customer. He had a Brazilian cherry floor, and I built him an entertainment center and a bar. I used oak plywood and solid oak for both. He took a piece of flooring to Sherwin Williams, and they made him stain that matched the floor very well. Still looked like oak, but the grain was a lot more muted than, say, golden oak. Look into the stock color stains, and if necessary, you can have custom mixes made. They won’t look like cherry, since the grain is so different, but it can look pretty good. Hope this helps.
I think you’re going to have to replace the doors to really pull this off, and you’ll probably need to reface the other surfaces, too. Once oak is stained, you’re going to have a very hard time changing this color, and as Woodtick says, the grain of these two woods is totally different. There are companies specializing in cabinet renewal that replace the doors and apply new veneer to the other surfaces, and if you want this change bad enough, that’s probably the best route to go.
