Use straight vinegar. Rinse with a clean rag. Repeat as necessary until grease is gone.
Paint thinner works well and isn’t very strong.I use it all the time prior to painting kitchens.
Dawn dishwashing liquid and very hot water will take it off. Scrub it with a sponge or dish cloth, rinse well with very hot water, then dry with a lint free towel. Be sure to moisturize the wood (I’m assuming it’s wood) after cleaning. I use Old English or Liquid Gold.
