We looked for alternatives, but could find nothing. You risk wasting lots of time and money attempting to jury rig something. As it is, making the cabinet exactly and installing the hardware perfectly is quite a lot of work. When you're done, you want it to look and operate as planned, right? If you do it yourself and too cheaply, you risk ruining the TV. The lift mechanism is special and really, really smooth. (garage door mechanisms are not) You also need to allow for the wiring to be protected and that is a task in itself. I would talk to a home theater company and see what they have to offer.
