With all the issues we have this election, what cabinet position do you think is the most important? Any suggestions on who might be a good candidate for that job?

Right now, it is a tie with the Sec. of Energy and Sec. of Defense.
Secretary of State. Colin Powell.
Bush needs a Secretary of Sanity, which explains why his Administration has been a complete, total, unmitigated failure and will go down in history as the worst in American history.
Attorney General, because like Gonzo,he/she could turn this country into a dictatorship. Also Secretary of Defense, because they can mishandle or resolve problems with other countries and thereby raise or ruin America’s reputation abroad,in relation to peace or war.
Secretary of State is the most important cabinet post because it represents the US, internationally !
I’d have to go with Energy or State. Either way, we’re going to have to deal with other countries. The world is getting smaller and we are competing with more and more people for fewer and fewer resourses.
I’d really like to see some business people in those positions who have shown a “human” side to their companies. Look at some of the employee and environmentally friendly companies who make multi-millions of dollars — and steal a CEO or two!
EDIT: I must say I also like your question. Thought provoking, but not an evil left/right wing extremist jab.
Its hard to answer the question because ultimately the president has final say on key decisions, so its a matter of which specific person the president listens to most. Though not a traditional “cabinet” position(isn’t that a parliamentary term?)clearly in this administration the vice president has the biggest impact on decisions, and that’s new. But that’s why it comes down to individual personality and their relationship with the president, so long as its in a key portfolio(they’re at the table).
I’d say secretary of defense, only because military affairs are often something a president doesn’t know a whole lot about. Hence he has to trust more. The same could be said about energy and the economy, but I don’t think single decisions on those issues have as great an impact as a single military decision(like disbanding the iraqi army after the invasion).
So secretary of defense just because it requires more faith in their judgment, and single decisions can have a monumental impact.
As for who best to hold this position? I honestly don’t know. There aren’t a whole lot of high profile military figures. The guy who was head of centcom in the middle east until he got fired recently for publicly advising against attack Iran maybe. I really don’t know. I say him because he must have known what he was talking about(head of centcom), yet he was willing to voice his opinion anyhow(basically got fired for it).
Dear Puller:
Nice Intelligent Question!
Thanks!
Ans.: The State Dept. & The D.O.D.~
should probably be a Major Focus!
(I like Sam Nunn if he is available!)
But don’t forget about ~
The Presidents Chief Of Staff !
This is a critical doorway to the Oval Office.
Also numerous NSA Advisors!
The D.O.J. is a MESS!
It may take years to make this Dept.
FUNCTIONAL Again!
I can’t recommend a name here!
It will take months to formulate
a list of people to fill these posts!

It’s very difficult to say because the various departments and their associated Secretaries are all important depending on what pops up and when…
For instance, I am inclined to say that this next year, the Secretary of Labor will have alot on his or her plate because of the economy being so bad… as will the United States Trade Representative.
Another commonly over-looked Cabinet member who is extremely influential is the Chief of Staff… this person is responsible for juggling the varied importance of all the other cabinet postitions and often is a representative (thanks to Bush) of the President’s image in the media…
