What kind of wood floor would work well with honey oak cabinets and trim?

We may be buying my parents house and I would like to see wood floors throughout much of the house. The problem-Everything is Honey Oak (which I’m not wild about); doors, trim, cabinets, baseboards. I am not prepared to refinish all of the exsisting wood, so I plan to stick with the oak. What floor would look ok next to honey oak baseboards? Maybe a verigated floor that has a little honey color here and there? I just don’t know.

Oak has such a strong pattern that you’re going to have to consider that for any flooring you are contemplating. I would avoid maple or anything clean and fine grained as the oak will just dominate it and it won’t look right.

I work in a flooring store and answer this question alot in the course of my job so have had quite a bit of time to think about it. My suggestion would be to surrender to the oak and put in oak flooring. If you want to update the look, you could consider a hand scraped look and go lighter or darker than your existing honey oak cabinets. Dark hand scraped woods are very hot right now, you’ll see them in all the design mags. For a dark floor, it’s important that you have enough light and enough space to not create a “cave”.

Yes, I agree with the last user however, you might consider cork flooring as it is available in different color options. That way you can match your honey oak but not add more oak, which as I understand it, you are not crazy about. ;)

Also, bamboo flooring is interesting, and while the grain and look are different a “carbonated horizontal” bamboo might blend quite nicely with your cabinets and trim. Carbonated refers to a darker carmel look instead of your standard natural (lighter) bamboo.

Both aforementioned products are often reasonably priced and should be available at most flooring retailers. I too work in flooring, but in California, and green technology like bamboo and cork are very popular right now.

Remember choosing new floors is supposed to be fun, so have a good time with it. Good Luck, hope this helps.
