    I think typically white pine is used. But there are different grades. You’d want something made with a higher grade of pine so that it doesn’t get dinged up easily.

    Most people use birch.

    White pine and knotty pine are common choices.

    I prefer poplar because it is more blemish free and can be stained if done properly.

    If you have the money, cherry, mahogany or oak are better choices.
